While we already saw the teaser trailer for Steven Spielberg’s upcoming film Ready Player One, the first official trailer has been released and it sure is insane. The footage is literally swarming with special effects and references to iconic 80’s movies. They also revealed more of the film’s actual plot and story, which may interest those of you unfamiliar with the book this movie was based on.
The footage begins with a look at both the real world and the OASIS, before explaining that the creator of the OASIS has died. Interestingly enough, he left an Easter egg in the game, which gives whoever finds it total control of the virtual reality and endless riches.
Aside from a few villains who also want control of the OASIS, there are endless Easter eggs from other films and video games. They even managed to include Chucky from the Child’s Play franchise!
While it’s pretty incredible to see such a vast landscape for a film, I can’t help but feel like it may be a little too much. The best way to sum up my feelings, I think, is a quote from another Steven Spielberg film called Jurassic Park – that being whoever was involved were so “preoccupied with whether or not they could that they didn’t stop to think if they should.”
“The film is set in 2045, with the world on the brink of chaos and collapse. But the people have found salvation in the OASIS, an expansive virtual reality universe created by the brilliant and eccentric James Halliday (Mark Rylance). When Halliday dies, he leaves his immense fortune to the first person to find a digital Easter egg he has hidden somewhere in the OASIS, sparking a contest that grips the entire world. When an unlikely young hero named Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) decides to join the contest, he is hurled into a breakneck, reality-bending treasure hunt through a fantastical universe of mystery, discovery and danger.”
Ready Player One hits theaters March 30, 2018.
