Hugh Jackman’s portrayal of Wolverine in the X-Men movies since 2000 is regarded as iconic – but this year’s Logan is deemed as the one film that truly got the Marvel character right.
Jackman seems to share the same thoughts, as he revealed in a recent interview with Variety:
“I wish I’d started playing him like that 17 years ago. So there’s some sense of missed opportunity, but when I saw ‘Logan,’ I sat there and I did have tears in my eyes. The main feeling I had was: There, that’s the character. I feel like I’ve done it now. And I was calm and at peace, but I’m going to miss that guy.”
While Disney and FOX appear to be reaching a deal to where Fox’s Marvel own characters could appear in the MCU, Jackman won’t be returning – as Jackman said when he was asked if this was his final time as the character:
“When I had the script, I was like, ‘Yes.’ And when I was shooting the movie, yes. As I sit here today, yes. God knows how I’ll feel in three years. But right now, absolutely.”
He did say he’s fine with the character being re-cast:
“The character will go on. Someone else will play it, for sure. (I’m fine with it), unless Daniel Day-Lewis plays him and wins the Oscar, then I might have a little problem.”
As far as Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the MCU, it’ll just go down as one giant missed opportunity. The sad part is that we got Jackman in terrible X-Men movies like X-Men: The Last Stand and X-Men Origins: Wolverine, when his time could have been used in more productive ways.
Who knows, though? Maybe Marvel Studios would bring him back? With their tenancy to re-cast roles, though, it’s not very likely at this point.
