While Hugh Jackman is known universally as the popular X-Men character, Wolverine, it turns out the actor had a chance to play another well known character – even more so than Wolverine was before Jackman made it iconic. The role we’re referring to is none other than 007, James Bond.
In a recent interview with Variety, Jackman revealed:
“I was about to do X-Men 2 and a call came from my agent asking if I’d be interested in Bond. I just felt at the time that the scripts had become so unbelievable and crazy, and I felt like they needed to become grittier and real. And the response was: ‘Oh, you don’t get a say. You just have to sign on.’ I was also worried that between Bond and X-Men, I’d never have time to do different things.”
It’s definitely an interesting prospect, and not really one that I can imagine. With Daniel Craig leaving the role – who knows? Maybe Jackman could play Bond in the future? After all, Jackman said he won’t be returning to the role of Wolverine:
“[Wolverine’ll] come back, just not with me. Well, except on Saturday nights at my house. I dress up! When my kids are not doing their homework, I dress up and the claws come out [laughs]. I just have to do that [raise an eyebrow] with the claws and it works! Definitely someone else will play the role [of Wolverine], it’s a great role. You know, it’s like a Bond or it’s like a Batman, those kinds of roles. Other people will play him for sure.”
With the news that Disney could be buying FOX, it’ll be sooner rather than later that we’ll see the role get re-cast for the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and whoever plays the character will certainly have some big shoes to fill.
