Can you see WWE star John Cena as Doctor Manhattan? It’s hard to imagine the wrestler turning blue but he is currently rumored to play the hero for the new Watchmen TV series for HBO – thanks to some recent social media posts by himself.
It is worth noting that Cena was rumoured to appear in a couple of heroic roles recently such as Thor: Ragnarok and Shazam, however both were debunked. But speculation for his role in HBO’s Watchmen is not unwarranted. Cena recently posted an image of Doctor Manhattan and the iconic Watchman smiley face to his Instagram which has given fans plenty of reason to believe that he is going to suit up. The star is known for sharing random images without context but could there be something more for why he posted these two particular pieces?

The character’s alter ego Jon Osterman was previously played by Billy Crudup in Zack Snyder’s Watchmen with the glowing blue Doctor Manhattan created via CGI. With Cena’s physique, the series won’t need to go completely digital to create the proper look.
But Cena isn’t all just looks. With previous acting experience in movies such as Daddy’s Home 2 and The Wall, the wrestling champ-turned-actor could very well pull this off.
The show’s creator, Damon Lindelof, previously had this to say about the upcoming series:
“Watchmen — it was dangerous. And you can’t be dangerous for dangerous’s sake, but the reason that I’m doing this is these are dangerous times, and we need dangerous shows.”
It’d definitely be an interesting choice.
