Though it hit cinemas all the way back in 2013, images from behind the scenes of Man of Steel have now surfaced online. The images show Superman actor Henry Cavill testing an unused variant of the iconic suit.
This suit isn’t too far removed from the final suit used in production. The only noticeable difference is that the hero’s S is missing its yellow parts, the red instead sitting squarely on the blue fabric. The material and style seems to be exactly the same as what was eventually used, so if any other differences are present, they’re pretty hard to spot:
The suit isn’t as different as a rumored black suit for Justice League would have been, but apparently, that was never going to happen according to a VFX person that worked on the film:
“There was (sadly) never a black Superman suit,” he said.
It’s interesting, because there was merchandise for Justice League actually released with the black suit, and Cavill himself actually teased the black suit multiple times on social media:

We could still end up seeing the black suit, but that seems highly unlikely at this point. For those of you who saw Justice League already (minor spoiler) Superman’s suit is noticeably lighter than the one we saw in Man of Steel. If it happens, it better happen soon, as Cavill is only under contract for one more appearance as Superman. He revealed what he hopes to see:
“There’s a wonderful opportunity to tell the Superman story,” Cavill said. “Now there is a fantastic chance to show Superman in his full colors and tell a very complex, character-driven movie that is based on story and have that wonderful sensation of hope and happiness. A feel-good movie with lessons laced in there as well.”
Personally, I prefer that they went with the classic yellow backing of the shield.
