Justice League reached worst case scenario status when it released. It didn’t make near the amount of money Warner Bros. had predicted it would, and the lack of enthusiasm of the audience has people wondering if the studio will stop torturing itself and everyone else with release after release of mediocrity. One director of the DCEU camp responded to the rumor that his film wouldn’t be made after all, and it’s fitting considering that the audience at large considers the films to be a huge snooze-fest.
“Nobody told me. Can I take the day off tomorrow then? I really want to sleep in.”
Lights Out and Annabelle: Creation director David F. Sanberg was responsible for that comment via his Reddit account. He is working on Shazam!, which stars Zachary Levi in the titular role.
DC still has a lot going on despite the claims that the DCEU is crashing and burning, and Shazam! especially is moving full steam ahead. It already has a release date in the spring of 2019 and cast members signing on. Asher Angel will play Shazam’s alter-ego, Billy Batson, and Mark Strong is a contender for the Dr. Sivana, the villain.
Shazam! isn’t going to really be a part of the DCEU as strongly as the other films have been. If Warner Bros. cancels their DCEU films, it’s likely Shazam! would continue on. Justice League is playing in theaters now, while Aquaman releases December 21, 2018. Shazam! will release April 5, 2019 and Wonder Woman 2 on November 1, 2019. Cyborg has a release date of April 3, 2020 and Green Lantern Corps is set for July 24, 2020.
Shazam! synopsis: Billy Batson, a youth who works as a radio news reporter is chosen to be a champion of good by the wizard Shazam. Whenever Billy speaks the wizard’s name, he is instantly struck by a magic lightning bolt that transforms him into an adult superhero empowered with the abilities of six mythical figures.
