For the most part, fan theories are just fun things that aren’t actually true. In the case of Jason Voorhees and Evil Dead, one fan theory involving Jason being a Deadite – has actually been confirmed as true.
Jason Goes To Hell director Adam Marcus has confirmed that Jason is a Deadite – and it’s canon, something fans have speculated for years now. In an interview with Horror Geek Life, the director stated:
“[Pamela Voorhees] makes a deal with the devil by reading from the Necronomicon to bring back her son. This is why Jason isn’t Jason. He’s Jason plus The Evil Dead, and now I can believe that he can go from a little boy that lives in a lake, to a full grown man in a couple of months, to Zombie Jason, to never being able to kill this guy. That, to me, is way more interesting as a mashup, and Raimi loved it!”
“It’s not like I could tell New Line my plan to include The Evil Dead, because they don’t own The Evil Dead. So it had to be an Easter egg, and I did focus on it…there’s a whole scene that includes the book, and I hoped people would get it and could figure out that’s what I’m up to. So yes, in my opinion, Jason Voorhees is a Deadite. He’s one of The Evil Dead.”
We very nearly had a Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash movie, which Bruce Campbell said just wouldn’t have worked:
“We had a five minute conversation with New Line Cinema about Ash vs. Jason vs. Freddy. They approached us. So they go, ‘What do you think about that?’ And we were like, ‘Great, Ash can kill ‘em both.’ There was a long pause, ‘Well actually that’s not something we can entertain.’ And we couldn’t control any other character, only control Ash – what these guys said, or what they did and you can’t kill either one. So right from the start, it’s creatively bankrupt. Economically, now you’re splitting the pot with two other partners – nah. We’re good. So that’s why – fans may not realize why things don’t happen.”
It’s a pretty interesting concept to have a shared horror movie universe, and one that I’m sure fans wouldn’t be against. Screenwriter Max Landis actually pitched an idea for a giant horror crossover movie. It just seems like it’d be something that would be incredibly hard to pull off. With so many iconic horror characters, though, it could happen one day – couldn’t it?
