IT director Andy Muschietti has already expressed interest in the past about wanting to direct an adaptation of Stephen King’s Pet Sematary, but it looks like Paramount had a different idea.
It’s been reported by Deadline that writer/director duo Dennis Widmyer and Kevin Kolsch have been tapped to revive King’s story. The novel was previously adapted in 1989, in which the film later spawned a sequel in 1991 starring Terminator 2’s Edward Furlong.
You may remember the writer/director duo’s 2014 film Starry Eyes, so although they may not have experience with King’s works, they sure know their horror. Starry Eyes received plenty of praise and positive reception, so Paramount’s decision to hire them for such an emotionally dramatic horror story makes sense.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura and Steven Schneider are attached as producers.
As far as the plot for King’s original 1983 novel goes,
“Louis Creed and his wife Rachel move their two children into a home and soon learn there is a creepy Pet Sematary near their property, where legend has it that animals buried there come back to life. It starts with their cat being run over, and brought back, and it gets much worse when the reanimation attempt turns to humans, who don’t come back exactly as they were before.”
There is no release date as of yet, but be sure to check back for more information!
