Although some have lost hope since Trick ‘r Treat 2, the sequel to 2007’s Trick ‘r Treat, was announced several years ago with no progress made, Michael Dougherty still hopes to start production soon.
Trick ‘r Treat quickly became a cult classic after its direct-to-video release, spawning comic books and even short webisodes for the now defunct FEARnet. It only took a few short years before Legendary Pictures announced that an official film sequel would go into production – but that still has yet to happen.
Dougherty has been keeping himself busy with projects like Krampus and the upcoming sequel to Godzilla. And it was during a recent interview with Post Mortem Podcast that he voiced his desires to start writing the Trick ‘r Treat sequel now that Godzilla: King of the Monsters has wrapped filming.
“My hope is that once Godzilla has been put to rest that I can dive back into [Trick ‘r Treat 2]. I would love to finish writing it in post-production [of Godzilla] and then I’d love to make it my next project. But we’ll see.”
While he hasn’t stated anything for sure, there should be plenty of time for him to write a new Halloween anthology. Godzilla: King of the Monsters doesn’t hit theaters until March 22, 2019, so with almost a year and a half until then there should be plenty of time for both projects.
Dougherty also explained he wants the film to be accessible for newcomers to the Trick ‘r Treat franchise, while also containing ties to the first for existing fans.
“Anything is possible. The skeleton, no pun intended, of the sequel is there, and right now, it’s really four different stories, with the exception of Sam, who serves as that intertwining limb. I do think it’s important that, if you’re new to Trick r treat, you can sit down and watch it without the baggage of the first one, but that’s not to say that we won’t have some threads that tie everything together, or maybe some characters from the first might show up.”
With the success of Krampus and the intense following that Trick ‘r Treat has gathered, a sequel seems like a no-brainer. Besides, who knows what tricks Dougherty has up his sleeve now with the experience from directing Godzilla and his greatest foes.
