Mark Wahlberg, who has been known to play some questionable roles in his career, says he has asked God to forgive him for the role he played in Boogie Nights. He is Catholic and has become more open with his love of God and everything that comes with it.
He was in Chicago this past weekend promoting an event that helps young Catholics. While he was there, he spoke with Cardinal Blase Cupich about how far he converted and the affects it had on his movie career.
The Chicago Tribune reports that Wahlberg said:
“I just always hope that God is a movie fan and also forgiving, because I’ve made some poor choices in my past.”
While he was interviewing with Cupich, the question came up asking if he has ever asked God to forgive him for some of the roles he has played. He answered,
“Boogie Nights is up there at the top of the list.”
It was this film that was responsible for his massive success. It won several Oscars and proved to critics that Wahlberg was capable of acting and being a cohesive part of a story. After Boogie Nights, he went on to another successful film, Three Kings.
Movie roles are not the only thing he has a hand in that might make him want to ask God for forgiveness. During this interview, he also spoke about his time in prison for assaulting a Vietnamese immigrant.
“I’ve never been shy about sharing my past and the bad decisions I’ve made and being affiliated with gangs, being incarcerated, so absolutely I think they can identify with me on a personal level, and that’s why I’ve continued to try to do as much as I can to help young people. It’s one thing to give money, or to start programs. but to be there and be able to talk to them, and tell them there is someone who has been through the same things they are going through and was able to turn their life around, and turn it into a big positive. That’s always important. I feel remorse when I’ve made mistakes. If I could go back and change a lot of things that I did, I would. I look for ways to give back.”
Pretty interesting stuff.
