The first trailer for the upcoming X-Men spin-off movie, The New Mutants has arrived and it’s definitely a little darker than people were probably expecting it to be.
Back in May, director Josh Boone said they were going for a full fledged horror movie:
“We are making a full-fledged horror movie set within the X-Men universe. There are no costumes. There are no supervillains. We’re trying to do something very, very different.”
He also added:
“…a darker and more surreal and impressionistic X-Men series than we’d ever seen before. It felt like Stephen King meets John Hughes. We made a comic book with what our vision of the series would be. We love that Fox wants to make all these different X-Men spinoffs as drastically different as they can.”
The synopsis for the film reads:
Held in a secret facility against their will, five new mutants have to battle the dangers of their powers, as well as the sins of their past. They aren’t out to save the world — they’re just trying to save themselves.
It’s a unique and refreshing take on a property that needed something unique and refreshing. FOX seems to be all about taking chances lately, and I can’t blame them. After the success of Deadpool and Logan, they probably learned that it’s good to think out of the traditional box sometimes.
Marvel Studios seems to be doing the same thing with their Marvel Cinematic Universe, as Kevin Feige has said the upcoming films will end the franchise as we now know it.
The New Mutants hits theaters April 13th, 2018.
