After years of waiting, Marvel fans are finally (presumably) going to get the Gambit movie from FOX with Channing Tatum. That’s right. The X-Men spin-off film that no one thought would ever happen – is probably, maybe, potentially going to possibly happen. Maybe.
Deadline reports that the film will be released on February 14th, 2019.
Just last August, Tatum said they had started over with the script:
“We lit a fuse on the first one and just blew it completely out of the water. I think we got lucky – we got hit with some setbacks and it was all for a good reason. We were trying to do something completely different. We were trying to do something that this genre of movie hasn’t seen before. We kept running into the same problems, and then Deadpool and Logan came through and kicked the doors down. Now we’re really getting to do some of the things we’ve always wanted to do with the script – we’ve just sort of started over.”
It’s also being rumored that Daniel Craig is being eyed to play Mr. Sinister in the upcoming X-Men spin-off film, so that’ll be interesting as well.
With numerous director changes, delays and whatnot, I’ll be surprised to see this movie actually get made. Tatum seems dedicated to the role, so that’s a positive sign. I guess we’ve seen crazier things happen before, like getting an R-Rated Deadpool movie after years of development hell – and an R-Rated Wolverine film.
And I think that turned both of those turned out to be a pretty positive thing.
Whether or not we will actually see this movie get made is another story. It does seem as though FOX is ready to make more director driven films, so that’s something it has working in its favor. As long as it’s not as bad as X-Men: Apocalypse, it’ll be alright in my book.
