Marvel has finally released a trailer for its much anticipated series Runaways, which is set to air on streaming site Hulu next month. Marvel have had a string of successes with their small screen adaptations, such as Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and their Netflix empire. But success is not guaranteed just because it holds the Marvel logo. Their series Inhumans, which premiered on ABC, is seen as more miss than hit.
Based on the series of the same name, Runaways follows a group of youths who discover their parents are secretly part of an evil cabal called ‘The Pride’. After this revelation they run away and soon discover that they have abilities of their own. Abilities that they will have to get the hang of in order to survive.
The trailer gives us a brief introduction to our protagonists, including a glimpse of their powers. The video also as has a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment showing Old Lace. The velociraptor companion’s snout is all that’s visible as he looms over a crying Gert.

The trailer has a particular focus on The Pride, including clips from the parent’s perspective. So it seems as if the series will be exploring the villainous group in far greater detail than the comic. We are currently unsure of how the character’s powers will translate onto the show. But the promo continues to give us an exciting look at Nico wielding the Staff of One (presumably for the first time) and we see Molly’s eyes light up- the only indication of abilities Marvel have given us so far. We also see Karolina’s alien powers begin to manifest as her hands begin to glow in a rainbow light.
If the show is as good as the trailer it seems like we are in for quite a treat. However, if Runaways does prove to be a disappointment, we have plenty more to expect from Marvel, such as the Netflix Punisher series and Cloak and Dagger and New Warriors, which are set to air on streaming platform Freeform.
