It was announced back in March that the classic 1999 film The Matrix starring Keanu Reeves would be getting a reboot. Fans were understandably annoyed, as the movie is one that doesn’t seem like it needs a reboot.
Neo himself, Keanu Reeves, was asked about the film and had the following to say at New York Comic Con:
“Remaking The Matrix. I don’t know. Maybe it’s… I don’t know anything about it.”
It prompted screenwriter Zak Penn to say the following on Twitter:
1) Re: the Matrix, yes I’m writing something. Not a reboot, not a continuation, watch Animatrix, read comics to see what wachowskis did

2) a script in development is not a movie. No casting, director, style can be discussed yet. Nothing to see here folks…yet.

3) no need to put actors or anyone on the spot, because there’s nothing there yet. No reboot or reimagining, no recasting involved.

4) and this is not the point in process that those decisions get made. So many hoops to jump through, the first one I gotta do myself.

With Reeves currently working on John Wick 3, it’s unclear if he’d ever return, though he did say he would come back to do another Matrix film – under one condition:
“The Wachowskis would have to be involved. They would have to write it and direct it. And then we’d see what the story is, but yeah, I dunno, that’d be weird, but why not? People die, stories don’t, people in stories don’t.”
As a fan of the first two Matrix films, (not so much The Matrix Revolutions) I’m not sure it would be a good idea to make another film. Would I watch it, though? Yes. Yes, I most definitely would.
