GLAAD ambassador from Harlem, Gianna Collier-Pitts, has started a petition to allow Wonder Woman to explore her sexuality in Wonder Woman 2. Since she has started the petition, the number she sets as a goal keeps getting surpassed, so she raises it higher. A lot of people would like to see this happen, it seems.
Wonder Woman writer Greg Rucka confirmed last year that the champion of women’s rights is actually bisexual. Fans of the comics weren’t surprised, but anyone not familiar with the comics were. LGBTQ+ rights have been in the mainstream media for a few years now, and this could be a boost for that community.
Patty Jenkins has already made this transition possible by hinting the Amazonian women were in relationships with each other. This inspired Collier-Pitts to petition for this topic to be included in the sequel. It fits and would only support the character’s original story line. For anyone who doesn’t see the point, Colliers-Pitts said:
“Some of you may be thinking that this specificity doesn’t make a difference. But for people like me who rarely see themselves reflected in media, believe me. It does… I want to see Wonder Woman represented for who she is, especially for younger fans who might have trouble coming out and don’t have anyone they can see themselves on the screen.”
Since she has started the petition. 1,872 people have signed it, according to The Huffington Post. It would only take 628 more signatures to reach her current goal. However, she has raised her goal in the past due to the higher number of interested people than she anticipated.
Wonder Woman received instant success at the Box Office. All different types of people loved it, and it was widely received by women “who finally saw an image of themselves reflected in a superhero on the big screen,” writes Colliers-Pitts on the petition website. She continued, “needless to say, it was a success for everyone…except the bisexual community.”
Gal Gadot has signed on to reprise her role as Wonder Woman, and Patty Jenkins will return to direct. If you agree and would like to have your voice heard on this matter, head over to Change.org to sign Colliers-Pitts’ petition. You might have a chance at making history.
