Stephen King’s work has generated millions of fans over the decades. While many are drawn to the interesting monsters, unique settings, and haunting atmosphere – there’s something else that seems to make readers keep coming back for more. And that’s the brilliant spiderweb of connections that cross through all of Stephen King’s works.
With the latest movie adaptation of IT breaking records and an adaptation of Gerald’s Game coming to Netflix, Stephen King has been on everyone’s minds as of late. And what better to discuss than the Easter eggs that bring together his iconic characters and settings?
For example, The Dark Tower seems to be the biggest connecting piece. Randall Flagg, the villain from The Stand, happens to play a large role in The Dark Tower series of books. He also pops up in other King works too. In The Stand he reveals a variety of names he’s possessed over the years, one such being “He Who Walks Behind the Rows”. If you’re familiar with Children of the Corn, you’ll know that’s the deity the kids worship and sacrifice the town’s adults to.
Another famous character that appears in The Dark Tower series is Father Callahan, a priest from King’s novel ‘Salem’s Lot’. And in the novel Pet Sematary, a character drives past a road sign for ‘Salem’s Lot. While we’re on the topic of Pet Sematary, they even discuss a horrific event with a rabid St. Bernard that’s intended to be Cujo.
And if you’re familiar with Cujo, you’ll know it takes place in Castle Rock – a town so connected to King’s works, it’s being used as the name for an upcoming Hulu series.
In other words, these connections are endless and become so intricate that it’s clear King’s stories all make up one very specific and scary world. And who knows, maybe as these adaptations continue to get produced and break records, we may be seeing a cinematic universe come to fruition any day now.
