Despite being irrelevant during this millennium, its impossible to deny the impact that The Flintstones have had on comedic television. The animated pre-historic comedy has inspired shows like The Simpsons and Family Guy, with the family dynamic being the heart of all three shows. Interestingly enough, its Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane who has been rumored for the past few years to adapt the hit series.
MacFarlane, whose been in the news for his new show The Orville, recently was asked about the state of this Flintstones reboot. As McFarlane confirmed in his Reddit AMA, it seems it might be extinct.
“As of now, probably not. Honestly I couldn’t figure out a way to find enough differentiation between a modern-day Fred Flintstone and… Peter Griffin.”
Due to there being no such progress on the show, this news can’t be all that shocking. To be honest, any attempt to try and modernize the show would be incredibly forced, as the show truly was a product of its time. Its interesting to think though that MacFarlane’s cancellation of this show though is a few weeks after the horrible reviews for The Orville came out.
MacFarlane is certainly one of the most divisive talent in TV right now, as his comedic styling is very hit or miss. Personally, I think most of his material works, and I actually am a fan of his latest show The Orville. It’s certainly nothing substantial, but I enjoy its comedic approach to the Star Trek episodic formula. I am curious to see what MacFarlane does next, whether be another season of Orville or something else.
