One of the bigger hits of this year was definitely John Wick: Chapter 2. It was acclaimed by critics and fans alike, and was also a Box Office smash, so naturally, another film is on the way.
A new report from Variety confirms that John Wick: Chapter 3 will be released in 2019:
Lionsgate has set a release for the Keanu Reeves action movie “John Wick: Chapter 3.” The film is expected to hit theaters on May 17, 2019 — the first title to land on the date.
Director Chad Stahelski spoke about the production back in May:
“It’s more of a how fast can we get our shit together,” he explains. “But I would assume that if not by the end of this year, the beginning of next year. Currently, I’m acting as prep director. Hopefully everything will work out time wise.”
What’s really interesting, however, is how Stahelski hopes to present the film.
“We want, not so much to go bigger on the third one, but to show you more of the intricacies of the world… the inner workings of different parts of New York.… I think it would be a mistake budget wise and creatively to just go big and blow up a freeway. That’s not our gig. That’s a comic book or a Bond gig. We want to show you cool and intricate details.”
The third film will also contain more clues to Wick’s past and backstory:
“It’s not about you finding a hidden book or a secret map about who John Wick is. Anyone watching can start piecing it together. You know he’s had some serious training. Was it military? Ehh — he kind of looks military. Where’s he from? Well — he speaks all these languages…. We’ll give you a couple more pieces and let you stitch it together.”
It’s also interesting to point out that this third film will end the franchise – according to the director:
“We are going to put in something about the High Table, how that all works. We’re going to put in something about where John comes from, and where he wants to go. I don’t want to say too much more, but it will be a nice completion to Mr. Wick’s journey.”
Here’s hoping it’ll be as good as the first two films.
