Ever since it was announced that Danny McBride and David Gordon Green would lead the team to revive the Halloween franchise, reactions by fans have been mixed.
While the two have a resume consisting mostly of comedies, some fans believe that’s what will allow them to inject something fresh into the seemingly dead series. Other fans are more skeptical, thinking that someone more familiar with the genre should be attached. And apparently that almost happened.
While speaking with The Movie Crypt in an effort to promote his Death Note adaptation, director Adam Wingard revealed he almost got to helm the latest Halloween film.
“You know, I almost actually did the Halloween movie that they’re doing. It almost happened, but the deal just kinda fell apart. When I found out those rights were available I was immediately trying to figure out how to get in on that. But ultimately what I realized was I kinda already made my Halloween movie with The Guest. So it felt like it would be retreading on that kind of thing. In a way though, I still want to do a Halloween movie.”
Wingard apparently even got approval from Halloween creator John Carpenter to go ahead and do it:
“I actually got an email, in confidence, where Carpenter was basically… He actually gave them the thumbs up for me. And I kinda walked away from it like, I just got everything I wanted out of this job, you know. Like I just want approval from dad. And I walked away like, ‘This is about as good as it gets.’”
It definitely would’ve been interesting to see Adam Wingard make a Halloween film after his work on The Guest. But things must happen for a reason, as we’ll instead be having the David Gordon Green-directed sequel premiere next year.
Details are currently scarce, but hopefully we’ll learn more as we approach the October 2018 release date.
