Marvel’s next TV show is going to have all kinds of girl power.
THR reported today that the upcoming ABC show is going to be “more female skewed,” according to Karim Zreik, the studio’s Senior Vice President of Original Programming.
He described the project as “Jessica Jones-esque,” though one would imagine there will likely be less sex and violence than Krysten Ritter engages in on her Netflix show.
Speaking at the Edinburgh International Television Festival, Zreik also credited the success of DC’s Wonder Woman film with the rise in female comic readers. He said that Marvel wants to “target everyone, and bring in new fans.”
They also said that the upcoming ‘New Warriors’ series (led by Squirrel Girl) will be a comedy:
“It took us time to dip a foot into comedy because it has to be right. Marvel is never going to do an office comedy, you don’t need that.”
This is certainly welcome news, considering that women have been largely ignored as a viable demographic for decades. We’ve been reading comics all along, not to mention watching the movies and animated series, and cosplaying up a storm.
Hopefully, we’ll find out more details about this project soon. (Could it finally be the long-awaited Black Widow series?) In the meantime, let’s just be grateful that the industry is finally opening its eyes to the presence of a large contingent of its reader base.
Who do you hope will be the main character of the series? Are you interested in seeing this series? Be sure to tell us your thoughts in the comment section below!
