It looks like Warner Bros. is putting their foot on the gas when it comes to fast tracking Suicide Squad 2. The first Suicide Squad movie, directed by David Ayer, was bashed by fans and critics alike but still was able to be a huge box office blockbuster round up to $800 million and was even able to grab an Oscar – to the shock of everyone.
Now it seems that part two might start to film as early as 2018. WB has been searching throughout Hollywood to lock down a director for the film and was even able to bring a couple of names to the table like Mel Gibson and Jaume Collet-Serra.
Even as WB is looking to do a spin-off film with Joker and Harley Quinn, they’re still planning to get a sequel to Suicide Squad off the ground.
The film’s very own Rick Flag actor Joel Kinnaman made some recent comments about the progression of the film to The Hollywood Reporter:
“As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.”
WB might be a little too eager as the search still goes on for someone to fill the director’s chair. Plus, the troubled production of Matt Reeves’ The Batman and the reshoot of Justice League, which is being handled by Joss Whedon after Zack Synder’s departure, isn’t helping either.
Let’s hope Warner Bros. has learned from their mistakes from the previous film and we can get a proper Suicide Squad movie done.
