The Netflix show “The Defenders” has been a highly anticipated series featuring characters from Iron Fist, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones, and Daredevil all teaming up.
However – the final scene has left many fans with questions.
If you haven’t already finished the Defenders, be warned that this article features MAJOR SPOILERS!
The final episode ends with Matthew Murdock, aka Daredevil lying in a bed with a nun standing over. This scene looks very familiar to Frank Miller’s “Born Again” story arc in the Daredevil comics.
When asked about this, the man without fear’s actor Charlie Cox told The Hollywood Reporter that bits and pieces from the comics could play a role, however Netflix tries to keep things original:
”Everyone who loves Daredevil loves Born Again. You can’t not. And if that’s the case, then the implications of that would be very exciting to me. That would be great. Having said that, I know we don’t tend to follow any story blueprints too closely, because if you do, then you become a foregone conclusion.”
As seen by his reply, Charlie is just as excited as we are for this.
Cox also mentioned back in November that he’d love to see Bullseye make an appearance:
“It’s no secret, I’ve said it before and I get in trouble every time I say it, I’d like to see Bullseye make an appearance at some point. I think it’s a really interesting opportunity. Deborah Ann Woll obviously does not want Bullseye to show up for obvious reasons. Elodie Yung, who plays Elektra, doesn’t want Bullseye to show up either.”
For those who aren’t familiar with the Born Again series, it features Matt and his deteriorating mental state. This leads to a very dark environment, with Karen Page (played by Deborah Ann Woll in the Netflix adaption) selling Matt’s identity for drugs to accompany her newfound heroin addiction. This information works its way up to Kingpin (played by Vincent D’Onofrio in the Netflix adaptation). Naturally this causes a chain of bad happenings for Matthew, something that would make a very thrilling story.
Whether it follows this or not, Daredevil has been given quite a bit of material to work with, and I have very high hopes for the next season.
