Once it was announced that actress Milla Jovovich was starring in the upcoming Hellboy reboot as the Blood Queen, many fans noticed that the title seemed to drop the “Rise of the Blood Queen” subtitle. Now we know that was intentional – as the film’s new title is simply going to be Hellboy.
MovieWeb was able to get confirmation of this from a Lionsgate representative.
“The official title is just Hellboy. The film is considered a reboot of the 2004 Hellboy, and is going by the same name.”
Aside from Milla Jovovich, Neil Marshall’s reboot will also include Ian McShane as Professor Broom and David Harbour as the titular Hellboy.
No plot details have been revealed, but we can assume that Hellboy will fight against Milla Jovovich’s Blood Queen.
The film is set for production sometime before the end of this year. It’s also planned to be much darker than prior Hellboy films, as writer Andrew Cosby once said:
“I can’t really talk about specifics with regard to the story, which they’re keeping a pretty tight lid on at the moment, but I can say that this is a darker, more gruesome version of Hellboy,”Cosby began.
“Neil [Marshall] said from the very beginning that he wanted to walk a razor’s edge between horror and comic book movie, which was music to my ears, because that’s what I was shooting for in the script, and precisely what Mignola does so well with the comics.”
He continued:
“Honestly, everyone has just been working overtime to bring that Mignola magic to the big screen,”Cosby finished. “The script is done, but work will continue as we move forward, always trying to make it the best it can be.”
