Visionary and masterful director Steven Spielberg was at Comic Con earlier today to talk about his newest film Ready Player One and give the audience a peak of the movie. Within minutes of this panel the trailer was released online and it looks spectacular.
The film, based off of the novel by Ernest Cline is set in a dystopian future of 2044 filled with overpopulation and the economy on the verge of collapse. Enter the VR system known as “The Oasis”.
The deep computer system is used in all forms of life such as entertainment, education, and even the workforce. The story follows Wade Watts as he searches for an Easter egg that will forever change his life and the world.
From the looks of it, the trailer is following pretty closely to the books with a serious amount TV, Movie, Comic Book, and video games references. Even going as far to include the song Rush’s Tom Sawyer—which is the Wade Watts’ favorite band. We also got a glimpse of Watts’ car, the classic Back to the Future Delorean, Kaneda’s motorcycle from Akira, and a beautiful shot of Iron Giant from Iron Giant.
The visuals look stunning and conveys as much of fun and entertainment as the novel did.
I was as first skeptic when news drop that Cline’s book was optioned off to produce by Warner Bros as the book’s topic and story seemed so massive and possibly unfilmable. Once the trailer was released, that skepticism was thrown out the window and now the all that’s settled in is eagerness.
