Fans of the X-Men have been begging for a standalone Gambit movie for what seems like forever. There has been a lot of talk about when a movie might finally come about. New Mutants and Dark Phoenix are up on the block before Gambit, but it will come about. Channing Tatum confirmed work has already begun on the highly anticipated film.
ComicBook.com got a quick question in to the actor when he made an appearance at San Diego Comic Con. When asked if Tatum still had the role of Gambit, he responded with:
“Yeah, of course. We’re working on it right now.”
Reassuring as that may seem, the film has faced a series of setbacks before it even began. Doug Liman left the project earlier in the year. The film will still move forward despite this stumbling block, confirms producer Hutch Parker.
So exactly what issues have there been thus far? Liman shed some light on that not long after his departure:
“You know, it’s a crowded field of superhero films so the challenge for Gambit or any of those other movies is finding its unique space and its unique take,” Liman shared with IGN. “But, yeah, I think Simon Kinberg, who is producing it, is a great producer and he’ll create something great out of it.”
With the gaping hole of producer unfilled as of yet, Tatum’s reassurance has renewed a little of the fire for the film in the minds of the X-Men fans. He wasn’t able to make a “personal connection” with the film, but we hope Fox finds a director who suits the role so this can finally come to fruition.
