It goes without saying that Warner Bros. latest entry into The DCEU, Wonder Woman, has been an incredible success, not just for the studio but for female-led action movies in general.
However, there’s one actress who doesn’t believe the film to be as revolutionary as people are making out. Read on to find out more.
In a recent interview with Variety, former Batgirl, Alicia Silverstone revealed that she’s confused as to the attention that Wonder Woman is receiving for being for being a pioneer for films with female leads.
She told the interviewer:
“Before Wonder Woman…Wonder Woman? Before Wonder Woman there have been many movies with female leads, so I get a little confused, We have made strides, of course. I think about, what about all those wonderful comedians who are females who have had massive hits? There’s Bridesmaids.”
She then went on to add:
“I don’t know. I just feel like, over the years, there was Mean Girls, there was Clueless, over time we have had so many movies that have been female-driven.”
Whilst it is true that female led films have been successful in the past, she doesn’t seem to be able to grasp that Wonder Woman’s success comes from the fact that the genre has typically been very male-driven in the past.
In the eighties, Supergirl never saw the same success her male counterpart received and even films with a female lead these days still fail to find an audience, you only need to look at Scarlett Johansson’s Lucy or Ghost in the Shell to see that.
That being said, there have been plenty of strong female characters in films, Sigourney Weaver’s Ellen Ripley in Alien , Charlize Theron in Mad Max: Fury Road and even Johansson’s Black Widow in the MCU, so it definitely proves that we are entering a new age of cinema.
Silverstone then went on to complain about the movie itself, insinuating that it may not be the most ideal film for youngsters. She explained:
”It has to be Wonder Woman. It has to have tons of flash, right? Like when you’re looking at children’s films now, as a mom, I don’t want my kid to see all that. Loud effects, all the stuff that’s like stimulate, stimulate! But that’s what audiences want, so it’s a tricky thing. Sometimes it’s just the quieter more interesting things sometimes get seen because they touch someone enough.”
Personally, I believe that more youngsters should see the film. The character certainly acts as a better role model than somebody like Kim Kardashian or Miles Cyrus, and seeing as the film has recently just passed the domestic totals of both Batman vs Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad it certainly seems like others agree.
Maybe it’s just sour grapes on Silverstone’s part after Batman & Robin killed the Batman franchise back in 1997.
Either way, you can still check out Wonder Woman in theaters now.
