James Cameron set the film world on fire with his smash hit Avatar. It practically set a new standard for 3D movies, and to date, is still one of the highest grossing movies of all time. With the upcoming Avatar sequels, Cameron will be raising the bar yet again.
Cameron will be the first to implement glasses-free 3D technology in Avatar 2 (2020). In order to make this possible, Cameron’s production company (Lightstorm Entertainment) has extended its partnership with Christie Digital for an additional five years. The benefit there is that Cameron can utilize Christie Digital’s RGB laser projection system.
“In addition to the latest in projection technologies, Christie is fully committed to sharing our ongoing research and development efforts, including product roadmaps, with our co-visionary, Lightstorm, so that its productions will repeat the awe-inspiring success of Avatar in the years to come,” said president and CEO of Christie, Jack Kline.
The new laser projection system promises to deliver brighter images at a higher frame rate. With a clearer and sharper images, the need for 3D glasses will become unnecessary.
One difficulty that will remain for this film is whether or not theaters will be able to acquire the necessary projectors to show the film in its proper format. Thankfully, we have another three years until Avatar 2 comes out, so hopefully that’s enough time for theaters to adjust.
Cameron’s been hard at work to film both Avatar 2 and 3, which are being shot back to back. He’s planned out the Avatar series to reach up to a fifth installment. While fans have certainly been a bit impatient with the long and over due wait for an Avatar sequel, it would appear that this new technology could be well worth the wait.
