The powers of math and autism live on as Warner Bros. greenlights a sequel to their 2016 sleeper hit The Accountant. Deadline reports that screenwriter Bill Dubuque, director Gavin O’Connor star Ben Affleck, and producers Lynette Howell Taylor and Mark William are all in talks to make their returns along with Jon Bernthal.
The fact that The Accountant is getting a sequel may seem a bit random but I’ve done a bit of accounting myself and the numbers add up. The film grossed $86 million stateside and $69 million overseas for a grand total of $155 million dollars. While these aren’t exactly comic book movie numbers, the film’s budget was a mere $44 million and it was certainly a profitable investment in the end.
Though the critics weren’t too thrilled with the original (it sports a so-so 52% on Rotten Tomatoes), general audiences seem to have enjoyed it (the average IMDB rating is an actually pretty impressive 7.4 out of a possible 10) so making The Accountant Chapter 2 seems to be a smart move for WB.
I wasn’t a big fan of the original mostly due to the presence of Ben Affleck (who I’ve always considered to be one of the most overrated actors of all time) and a heavy reliance on two shocking third act twists one of which was painfully obvious and the other of which was just stupid. But, hey I’m only worth a $7 ticket. Who cares what I think? Bring on part 2.
