Since the announcement of two films being made about the Boston Marathon Bombing, I’ve been hesitant about the idea (especially as someone from Massachusetts). There is a fine line between making an movie with artistic principal and making something to exploit audiences experience for ticket sales. Thankfully, the first effort at this Patriot’s Day was a fairly honorable and well-made film.
Just a few months after the release of that film, we now have the incoming release of Stronger. Starring Jake Gyllenhaal, the film follows the true story of Jeff Bauman, a man who lost his legs in the bombing when supporting his girlfriend at the finish line. Check out the trailer:
Considering his track record over the past few years, I am willing to check out any movie that Gyllenhaal stars in. He has an impeccable track record of picking interesting roles, always finding projects that have a lot of merit. Between Nightcrawler, Nocturnal Animal, and Prisoners, Gyllenhaal is truly at the top of his game.
Based on the trailer, Stronger looks like a far more personal approach to the Bombing than Patriot’s Day. For me at least, that seems like a more fitting approach, putting the audience in the shoes of someone whose life changed forever because of that day. The trailer shows a lot of potential, showing a drama that doesn’t look to have easy answers with themes of guilt and blame.
It’s also exciting to see David Gordon Green directing behind the camera. Few directors have as a diverse resume as Green, with his career ranging with great indie dramas to even some hilarious stoner comedies. Green’s eye for humanity is sure to add a much-needed touch, and hopefully this is a bounce back after the mediocre Our Brand is Crisis.
Stronger hits theaters September 22, 2017. Are you excited for this film? Do you think it will be better or worse than Patriot’s Day? Let us know in the comments below!
