It looks like we may be getting our first hints as to what the next DCEU films will be.
A new report has revealed that the untitled Batgirl and Justice League Dark films will be the next to enter production for the franchise.
The news was stuck in a Hollywood Reporter article regarding how Wonder Woman director Patty Jenkins has yet to sign on for the film’s sequel.
Per the report:
“Warners execs also may have been a bit unprepared for the level of success and acclaim Wonder Woman has achieved; initial tracking reports predicted Jenkins’ $150 million-budgeted film would open to about $65 million domestic, solid but hardly a reason to begin planning a long-range strategy. And the studio had been focusing on putting together Justice League Dark, a supernatural team-up project, and Batgirl, a Joss Whedon-helmed film (among other Bat-offerings), as the likely next movies to go into production in the DC Comics universe.”
Although plot details are unknown for the Justice League Dark adaptation, the comics took a decidedly dark and supernatural turn with their storytelling. They generally followed the adventures of characters John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon.
The film currently has Scott Rudin attached as a producer, with Michael Gilio penning the script. It was also previously being developed by director Guillermo del Toro years ago, before he was removed from the project.
Batgirl, on the other hand, is set to be written, produced, and directed by Joss Whedon. It’s said to be inspired by Gail Simone’s New 52 Batgirl comic. Whedon already had experience with the DCEU, having stepped in to take Justice League over after Snyder had to step away from the film.
Justice League is the next film from the DCEU to be released, with a November 17, 2017 release date. Aquaman will soon follow with a 2018 release date.
