Joel Kinnaman, who played Rick Flag in the first Suicide Squad, has revealed that the script for the sequel is currently being written. He also revealed the plan is to shoot the film sometime in 2018.
Although the first film was negatively received by critics, it still managed to make a hefty sum of money. It earned $325.1 million domestically and $420.5 million overseas, for a worldwide gross of $745.6 million. After a profitable intake like that, talks of a sequel easily managed to overcome the negative reviews. And now thanks to Kinnaman, we have an idea of when to expect it.
When talking with THR, he explained:
“As far as I know they’re writing the script and I think the plan is to shoot it sometime in 2018, but that could change. I think I’ll definitely come back for it.”
Meanwhile director David Ayer who helmed the first Suicide Squad flick has moved away from the sequel. His focus is set on Gotham City Sirens, and Kinnaman noted his thoughts on Ayer’s lack of involvement as well:
“Ultimately, I’d love for David Ayer to direct it, but if he doesn’t want to direct it then someone who is great with character and that’s able to ground the story and maybe put these characters in a more normal situation. It would be really interesting to see these crazy characters interact with regular people as well.”
Although director talks came up before, with possibilities like Mel Gibson and Guy Ritchie, there’s still no official word on who may take over the project. But if there’s word of a shooting date now floating around, then some more official announcements are likely to come soon.
