Gambit. The last time we saw him he was flying away from the destruction that was X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Since then, a solo movie has been struggling in development hell.
Firstly the Gambit movie lost its initial director, Rupert Wyatt (Rise of the Planet of the Apes) and then his replacement, Doug Liman (Live Die Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow) left in August.
Liman stated that he wasn’t feeling the script and that his departure was due to:
“I never formed a connection…Many of these movies, I don’t have the connection on day one, but I find the connection. I just never find it. I don’t always find a connection. I want to make a movie that, if anybody else made it, it would be different.”
Clearly, Liman didn’t form a connection with DC’s Justice League Dark as it’s been reported he has left that project also.
Fox producer Hutch Parker, in an interview with ScreenRant has shed some light on where Gambit is.
ScreenRant: Yeah, if you look at the three movies next year, every one of them is sort of like a franchise in and of itself, so you can see the potential there. Is Gambit still part of that plan?
PARKER: It is. It is. I don’t have any news on that but there’s still a desire and a passionate interest to see that movie made.
So there you have It, it is, it is coming, but they don’t know when. It’s still assumed Channing Tatum is still reportedly playing the titular character. But from what Parker has said there is still no firm details in place.
20th Century Fox do still want to use this Character and now Wolverine has been retired (But for how long), Fox will be looking for a new headline character.
Gambit still doesn’t have a release date… or a production date.
