Wonder Woman star Chris Pine, in an interview with Screen Slam knocked the competition suggesting Marvel haven’t got any new ideas.
On why he took the role and what he thought about the many superhero movies, Pine stated:
“She, in particular – Patty [Jenkins] was a great reason why I wanted to be involved. I met her, I hadn’t read – there was no script. Then she told me what she wanted to do: the story, my character, and Gal’s character,”
He goes on to say:
“I, like you [the interviewer], agree that within this genre, it’s difficult to do something new, and usually, you just see a bunch of people killing one another – in outfits and blowing up cities. Like, I know there’s a thing called ‘Infinity War’, which is like, I don’t – really, like Infinity War? We need more war for all time?”
Personally, I think he misses the point of the Infinity War, but he does raise a good point. The Superhero genre is the biggest film genre today and there comes a point that it will become over saturated. These movies need to do more things to keep them relevant. Wonder Woman is a prime example, set during The Great War, it is rare to see any film use this time period let alone a superhero movie.
Captain America has been able to pull this chameleon-like mix of genre’s, with The First Avenger being an all out Second World War film. The Winter Soldier being a Spy thriller akin to films from the 1970’s and Civil War as a precursor to where the Marvel films are heading.
Pine is correct in saying Patty Jenkins has done something new. She has been able to bring something fresh to the superhero genre, that has been needed for a long time. We have our first successful female superhero film, which happens to be the best DCEU movie to date.
Wonder Woman is in cinemas now, and I would urge everyone to go and see it.
