Currently, there are three Star Wars films in development. This begins with Star Wars: The Last Jedi, set for a release on December 15th of this year. The next is a spin-off focusing on Han Solo set for May 25, 2018. It will be the second spin-off since 2016’s Rogue One. Finally, we have Star Wars: Episode IX scheduled for a May 23, 2019 release.
Now there’s confirmation from Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy that another film will soon be announced. She was asked during an interview with Vanity Fair regarding whether or not we can expect any new announcements, and she had this to say:
“Yes. We haven’t identified it yet, but yes. We have a couple of things right now that we’re circling, and we’ll make a decision between the two pretty shortly. It’s probably for 2020, and we will make a decision by June.”
Previous rumors have indicated that we would be getting either a Boba Fett or Obi-Wan film, and that adds up with what Kennedy had to say about making a decision. However, a Boba Fett film may be more likely, as that happened to be the project Fantastic Four director Josh Trank worked on before he left the production.
Either way, it’s nice to know Star Wars will still be continuing past Episode IX. Let’s just hope they can keep the momentum going and stay fresh. There’s a lot of potential to tell some great stories, but also plenty of room to mess them up.
