Although things were looking bright for fans of the Justice League Dark comics, the future of the upcoming film adaptation is once again shadowed by the loss of its director.
According to Variety, Doug Liman is no longer attached to the project. Their sources reveal he left due to scheduling conflicts, as he decided to instead focus working on Lionsgate’s Chaos Walking film. However, they also revealed that the studio is hard at work looking for a new director to take on the project. Warner Bros. has yet to make an official comment.
Plot details are still unknown, but the comics took a decidedly dark and supernatural turn with their storytelling. They generally followed the adventures of characters John Constantine, Swamp Thing, Deadman, Zatanna, and Etrigan the Demon.
The film still has Scott Rudin attached to produce, and Michael Gilio is writing the script.
John Constantine was previously adapted twice for live-action. Once as a film starring Keanu Reeves in 2005, and again as a TV series with Matt Ryan playing the titular hero. Meanwhile Dick Durock played Swamp Thing in a film directed by Wes Craven in 1982. There was also an animated Justice League Dark film which went straight-to-video earlier this year, and featured Matt Ryan once more voicing Constantine.
Guillermo del Toro was once attached to direct Justice League Dark before he left much like Liman, so let’s hope the third time’s the charm and the next director sticks.
