Jason Voorhees is one of the most iconic and legendary villains in cinema. Although he didn’t officially appear until Friday the 13th Part 2, he’s gone on to evolve throughout the entire series and represents a great variety of thematic symbols. Of course, there are still plenty of questions when it comes to just what makes Jason tick – and I’m not talking about why he always comes back from the grave.
I’m referring to the motivations going on behind Mr. Voorhees’ hockey mask, and YouTuber TylersSoap took it upon himself to explain them.
His diagnosis begins by elaborating on Jason’s signature birth defects. Jason was born with Hydrocephalus, which is a real condition that forms when there’s an abnormally large accumulation of fluids in the skull. This is what gave Jason his deformed head and compressed his brain which resulted in decreased intellectual abilities.
He continues by explaining how Jason also suffers from Schizophrenia and Dissociative Identity Disorder. TylersSoap even gives a reason for why Jason wears his hockey mask, which is to dissociate himself from the brutal murders he commits.
It’s an interesting video that really dissects Jason’s motivations and personality traits, so be sure to check it out.
If you’re still in the mood for more Jason and Friday the 13th after watching that, remember Friday the 13th: The Game releases this coming Friday on May 26.
