Movies based off video games have had a bit of a bad time of it in recent times, I was going to say that for every good one there are five bad ones, but honestly I can’t think of a good one… maybe Silent Hill – maybe. But it looks like Hollywood aren’t ready to call it quits as Sony has finally announced who will be playing wisecracking hero Nathan Drake in it’s upcoming big screen adaption of the hugely successful Uncharted series.
Earlier today it was announced by Deadline that Spider-Man: Homecoming star, Tom Holland has been cast as Drake in the film. Those of you familiar with the character will no doubt be thinking that this whipper snapper is a little on the young side to be playing the charismatic hero, the reason behind this is that the film is currently being written to act as a prequel to the Video Game series.
The early days of Nathan Drake are something which was touched upon in both the Third and Fourth games in the franchise, so it would definitely make for a interesting story to tell on the screen. It’s likely that the film would would detail his early days of adventuring with professional moustache owner and surrogate father, Sully. Holland has definitely shown through his portrayal of Spidey that he has the ability to play a character quick with the wisecracks, let’s just hope he has the skills to portray the characters other traits.
The film is set to be directed by Shawn Levy and produced by Charles Roven, Avi Arad, and Alex Gartner. In the past both David O’ Russell and Joe Carnahan have attempted to bring the adventurer to the big screen but with the announcement of Holland joining the cast, it finally looks as though it is ready to get off the ground. Hopefully more of the cast will be announced in the near future.
