The future of the x-men series isn’t exactly clear. Despite the critical and commercial success of Deadpool and Logan, X-men Apocalypse was considered by most a failure with a lower than expected box office take and the lowest Rotten Tomato score sinceĀ X-men Origins: Wolverine. This didn’t bode well for continuing the rebooted story line, but Twentieth Century Fox seems to be pushing ahead with three new X-men films scheduled for 2018 including New Mutant, Deadpool 2, and Dark Phoenix; and it looks like a couple of familiar faces might be returning.
As reported by MTV News correspondent Josh Horowitz, Micheal Fassbender will return as Magneto in the upcoming Dark Phoenix. Horowitz said in a recent tweet:
“Want to know Fassbender’s X-Men future? Bet big on him appearing in Dark Phoenix but not New Mutants. Oh, I just saw Michael Fassbender BTW”
This would be the second cast member confirmed for DarkĀ Phoenix, along with Sophie Turner as Jean Grey. While not confirmed, X-men: Apocalypse producer Simon Kinberg is said to be both directing and writing Dark Phoenix.
Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique has also been confirmed:
“I’d rather not confirm any of those officially, but yes, the current story that we’re working on has that group involved as well as some of the younger characters that we introduced last time.”
Not much is known about the upcoming Dark Phoenix film, besides the fact that it seems like another attempt at adapting the famed Dark Phoenix Saga; as teased in X-men Apocalypse. Fassbender’s involvement bodes well for the film; as his portrayal of Magneto has always been considered one of the better performances in the X-men series.
The last attempt at adapting the dark phoenix saga resulted in the underwhelming X-men: The Last Stand, so let’s hope they do a better job this time around. We’ll find out when Dark Phoenix is released November 2, 2018.
