Obvious SPOILERS ahead.
No one ever said being an Avenger was easy but for Simon Williams, Wonder Man, saying he had a rough life would be an understatement. First introduced in Avengers #9 and dying in the same issue, Simon has been brought back from the dead (twice), had his brainwaves used to create Vision, been blackmailed by SHIELD and most recently, he’s been trapped inside mutant and leader of the Avengers Unity Squad, Rogue. In this month’s Uncanny Avengers #23, Simon is finally freed in the most unbelievably “comic book” way, after Rogue kisses none other than Deadpool.
Beast, Hank McCoy, explains that Simon was freed after Rogue absorbed Deadpool’s regenerative healing ability, allowing her to purge her body of Simon’s energy (comics everybody!). Simon picked the worst time to return to the world of the tangible as he’s told that Deadpool spent all of Simon’s money on the Unity Squad, not to mention the impending Hydra take over led by Captain America he’s about to be subjected to. The Unity Squad is also set to disband in Uncanny Avengers #24, leaving us to wonder what the plan for bringing Wonder Man back at this exact moment really was.
During 2015’s Secret Wars event, the multiverse was caving in on itself two Earths at a time in what was called an “Incursion.” It was discovered that in order to prevent these individual Incursions from happening, one of the two Earths involved had to be destroyed. In their plan to save mutant kind by relocating it to its own planet, the Apocalypse Twins Eimen and Uriel, doomed Earth 616, the main Marvel universe. In an effort to stop the Twins, Rogue absorbed the powers of every willing hero on the planet including Wonder Man. After the battle had been won, Rogue returned all the powers borrowed to their respective heroes. However, since Wonder Man is a being of pure energy, he was trapped within Rogue from then on.
Uncanny Avengers #24 hits stands next month on June 14th.
