In today’s comic book movie renaissance, the process of casting the movies stars usually follows a “hero first, villain second” model. For almost 10 years, Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson has been tied to play the villainous Black Adam but with the release date of his debut in Shazam set for 2019, the titular hero has yet to be cast. Casting Shazam for the DCEU will be a twofold process as the role will have to be played by two actors, the teenage Billy Batson and the hero himself Shazam.

During an interview for his upcoming remake of Baywatch, Johnson offered one of his dream castings for the role.
“I’m going to throw a name out here and I want to see how the fans are going to react to this,” Johnson teased. “…I’m not even going to tell his name, I’m just going to say ‘Lone Ranger.’”
Now unless he is referring to Johnny Depp who played Tonto in The Lone Ranger, who also has yet to join either the MCU or the DCEU, he’s most certainly referring to Armie Hammer. This casting would not be a huge surprise as Hammer has been rumored to be involved with DC films for quite some time, even being attached to play Batman in the cancelled Justice League: Mortal by director George Miller and teasing his own involvement in the current DCEU.
Johnson clarified his own fan casting by saying:
“I don’t even know if he’s interested. The studio doesn’t even know we’ve been having these conversations, by the way. I just remember meeting him, walking away going, “Man, that guy would look great, I bet, [sic] at Shazam.”
With the Shazam movie fast approaching and DC recently announcing a Black Adam solo movie in the works as well, we should expect more casting news on the horizon. Johnson finished his statement by including: “He (Armie Hammer) is one of many.”
Shazam is set to hit theaters April 5, 2019.
