Powers Boothe has died at the age of 68. The actor whose career spanned 40 years across film, stage, and television passed away in his sleep yesterday. His friend Beau Bridges confirmed this last night saying:
“It’s with great sadness that I mourn the passing of my friend Powers Boothe. A dear friend, great actor, devoted father & husband.”
You may not be able to immediately remember who Boothe was, but you’ve certainly seen his work (he does after all have 69 IMDB credits as an actor). His most recent work was as Gideon Malick in the TV series Marvel’s Agents of Shield along with other comic book films and shows such as Sin City and Justice League Unlimited. Boothe’s death was a huge loss for the western genre as well with roles in Tombstone and Hatfields and Mccoys. You also may recall him as Vice President Noah Daniels in 24, Lamar Wyatt in Nashville, or Cy Tolliver in Deadwood.
Personally, I’m always going to remember Boothe for Sudden Death which was the first film that I ever saw him in. As per usual for Boothe, he played a wonderfully nasty villain and it was a great time seeing him face off against Jean Claude Van Damme. Even though the movie was just another one of those “lone wolf vs. terrorists in one location” movies that sprang up in the wake of Die Hard, Boothe helped to elevate it to something much more fun than it had a right to be. He will certainly be missed.
