Well, folks, the Power Rangers reboot is officially a flop. Two months into its release and the film has grossed a mere $84 million stateside and $135 million worldwide. In comparison, that’s about $10 million less than what Guardians of the Galaxy Volume 2 grossed in its domestic opening weekend alone ($146 million). Stack those figures against a $100 million budget (not including advertising costs), and it looks like Lionsgate is going to lose a lot of money with this one.
There’s a lot of explanations that one could give for the films failure. I like to think that audiences are finally starting to get tired of reboots of franchises that are way past their expiration date (the recent failure of the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Blair Witch, and Point Break movies argue in my favor.
The real test will be the upcoming Baywatch reboot later this month), but I think a more likely explanation is the simple fact that very few people beyond the die hard fans care about the Power Rangers. The fact that it is apparently not very good (47 percent on Rotten Tomatoes) certainly does not help either.
Still, just because a movie under-performs at the box office, it doesn’t mean that it can’t get a sequel. Tom Cruise’s Edge of Tomorrow is getting a part two despite underwhelming box office returns. The same can be said for Pacific Rim and Sylvester Stallone’s Escape Plan. It’s certainly not impossible for the Power Rangers franchise to continue but I wouldn’t hold my breath.
