Last time on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2’s behind-the-scenes material, we took a look at some concept art that was revealed for Mantis and her more green-like appearances. Turns out she wasn’t the only new character that was considered for a comic-accurate appearance.
Kurt Russell’s attire for Ego seems to have gone a stage of “comic accuracy” of its own, though we use this term very loosely. The outfit design here, made by Christian Cordella, is much different from the one used in the film. Gone are the beard and cloak that appeared more of a sacred entity and what we find ourselves instead is a more royal-colored jacket and youthful look.
You can take a look at the alternate costume (courtesy of Screen Rant) below:
You may notice the concept art is labelled as “J’Son”, a name that doesn’t appear anywhere in the film. It may very well have to do with the secrecy of the role Kurt Russell was playing at the time of development, with even his chair being labelled so as well as other concept arts involved with Russell.
The ironic thing is it’s not too far off of his father role, as J’Son is a reference to the actual father of Peter in the comics, a leader of the Spartoi. Now, J’Son of Spartax wore this similar outfit in the more modern take of the Guardians comics:
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is currently playing in theaters.
