There’s no denying that the world today is divided. The Lightside vs The Darkside, Republicans vs Democrats, Trek vs Wars (It’s Trek!) and loving Marmite vs Hating Marmite. But the biggest rivalry today is probably Marvel vs DC. Marvel releasing Iron Man back in 2008 and sewing the seeds of its Cinematic Universe, slowly crafting a believable world inhabited by real heroes.
Unfortunately, DC have been on the back foot ever since trying to capture that money making formula Marvel have successfully crafted. Man of Steel, was met with mixed reviews, but effectively set up the DC Extended Universe, with its nods to Batman.
Sadly, in their haste to fill the gap Marvel had created with their ever growing roster of Avengers, Warner Bros decided not to grow Superman’s character and instead introduce Batman. This effectively screamed of rushing, and unfortunately is one of the factors Batman v Superman received less than good reviews.
As of writing, only three DCEU movies have been released, with Wonder Woman coming in June. The next one is Justice League released November 17th. This will see the teaming up of Batman, Wonder Woman, Cyborg, The flash, and Aquaman to face off against Steppenwolf.
Zach Snyder’s Justice League will most likely be compared to Marvel’s The Avengers, as it will see the majority of DC’s biggest players teaming up like we saw in 2012.
There’s still no sign of Superman in the trailers, but he will be returning in that film. Returning with him is Martha (MARTHAAAA) Kent, Clark’s adoptive mother, played by Diane Lane. In a recent interview on Watch What Happens Live, a viewer asked:
“Can you give us any Justice League spoilers, and will it be better than The Avengers?“
Now for any DC fans out there, I’d stop reading. Her reply was:
“No, and no. Short but honest – I hate to disappoint.”
Put bluntly, it sounds like even Lane doesn’t think it will be as good as The Avengers. This isn’t what fans of DC want to hear, especially from someone who is starring in the film.
However, it’s easy to become mixed up in speculation and picking apart every single word uttered from someone in the know. It could be that she is just answering a question the simplest way she can without spoiling anything. It’s clear that the ‘I hate to disappoint’ line was for the caller and not for the larger DC fan-base.
I for one will still be first in line when the film is released. Hopefully, they continue the lack of Superman advertising and actually hold something back for the film. compared to Batman v Superman the advertising has had so much more restraint.
Now that Guardians of the Galaxy has been released, we should be getting more advertising for the upcoming Wonder Woman film.
Wonder Woman is released June 2nd, and Justice League November 17th.
