Seeing Spider-Man in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is a concept that many fans never thought would come true. However last year we were treated to seeing everybody’s favourite web slinger team up with Tony Stark in Captain America: Civil War. Fans combusted with sheer joy at seeing the wisecracking superhero go up against iconic characters such as Captain America in a battle that would bring tears of joy to the inner child of men and women everywhere.
With fans then treated with the announcement of a solo film, it seemed as if Marvel may have finally edged one step closer at acquiring the character. Well not quite yet! Although that may all be about to change.
With Sony having failed to reboot the character effectively with Andrew Garfield in the role, Sony then went onto make a deal with Marvel which would include him into the MCU and allow Sony to still have full power over finance, distribution and creative control. With Spider-Man: Homecoming hitting theatres in June, talks of a sequel have already started to happen with many fans wondering whether or not he’ll be a permannet fixture in the MCU.
Dave Bautista has commented on Chris Jericho’s podcast about the situation and he seems rather optimistic about the characters future. The Guardians of the Galaxy star revealed how he believes that Disney/Marvel will eventually get the rights back to the character:
“I think they are doing a partnership now, but I think I don’t know this for sure, I think they are going to re-acquire Spider-Man.”
Now obviously, this’ll be music to most people’s ears however it seems a bit of a stretch for Sony to give up on Spider-Man entirely, especially when one considers their plans for a solo Venom movie. It’s been rumored for a while now that Sony are also looking into making their own Spidey-verse and with an animated Spider-Man movie on the way, it seems as if they’ll be relying on the rights for a long time to come.
It’s not impossible however to imagine that a deal can be arranged to keep Tom Holland’s iteration of the character at the MCU which would still be a huge benefit for both the fans and Marvel studios.
Would you like to see Marvel buy back the rights to Spider-Man? Which other characters would you like to see make an appearance in the MCU? Sound off down below!
