After long delays, The Dark Tower film finally looks like its on the horizon. Based on the acclaim Stephen King novel, many have been excited to see stars Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba duel it out on the big screen.
Following the release of a teaser to the trailer yesterday, the first official Dark Tower trailer is finally here. Check it out below, along with the film’s synopsis:
The last Gunslinger, Roland Deschain (Idris Elba), has been locked in an eternal battle with Walter O’Dim, also known as the Man in Black (Matthew McConaughey), determined to prevent him from toppling the Dark Tower, which holds the universe together. With the fate of the worlds at stake, good and evil will collide in the ultimate battle as only Roland can defend the Tower from the Man in Black.
This trailer gives me some reason to be both optimistic and somewhat pessimistic. The style and general visual aesthetics here are impressive, with some cool moments of action enticing the viewer. Both Elba and McConaughey seem like good choices to bring this material to life.
However, the trailer does give off a bit of a The League of Extraordinary Gentleman-vibe. Whether there can be enough substance to bring this material to life on the big screen is yet to be seen, with the story for the most part seeming very formulaic. I am also somewhat dubious of the teenage actor who is starring here, as he has a lot of pressure to carry this film partially on his shoulders.
The Dark Tower hits theaters on August 4th, 2017.
