When it comes to same-sex relationships, the small screen division of the MCU is definitely ahead of it’s big screen counterpart, with characters in both Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Jessica Jones being members of the gay community. But it sounds as though that may be about to change with 2018’s Black Panther. Read on to find out more.
A report of the footage presented at Marvel’s recent Open House has revealed that the film is set to introduce the first Lesbian characters to the movie franchise. The scene in question involves two members of King T’Challa’s (Chadwick Boseman) Dora Milaje, Okoye and Ayo (Danai Gurira and Florence Kasumba). During the footage shown, the character’s are seen using ‘Very strong sexual innuendo’ to compliment one another.
While this still doesn’t outright confirm the character’s sexuality, it certainly seems to hint that this may be the case. In the recent ‘A Nation Under Our Feet’ story arc by Ta-Nehis Coates, the Dora Milaje member Ayo is in fact in a relationship with Aneka, the former captain of the guard. It could be that the film is looking to adapt elements of this story, but is looking to combine characters rather than introduce too many.
This isn’t the only reference to gay characters being introduced to the MCU which has hit the web recently, with Guardians of the Galaxy director, James Gunn, recently explaining:
“You know, somebody asked me, ‘Will there be any gay characters in Marvel movies?’ and what I meant was there’s a lot of characters in the MCU and very few of them that we’ve delved into what their sexuality is. Whether it’s gay or straight or bisexual, we don’t really know. Um, so I imagine that there are probably, you know, gay characters in the Marvel universe, you know, we just don’t know who they are yet.”
It definitely sounds as though we can expect to see more LGBT characters being introduced into future films. In the meantime you can check out Black Panther when it hits theatres February 9th 2018.
