It seems that, although Wolverine’s most popular foe Sabretooth didn’t make an appearance in Logan, actor Liev Schreiber was approached to reprise it.
While X-Men Origins: Wolverine was largely panned by fans, there was one redeeming element. And that was Liev Schreiber’s portrayal of Victor Creed/Sabretooth. This led fans to hope the actor would return for his Sabretooth role in Logan, but sadly, it never happened.
But it turns out that some early drafts of the script did include a few scenes with Sabretooth. And Schreiber managed to explain why they were cut, given some scheduling conflicts. In an interview with Variety he explained:
“There was an invitation early on from Hugh [Jackman] and [director James Mangold] and I would have loved to work on it. It was very difficult given Ray Donovan’s schedule, and I think they went a different direction as well with story. I think it’s a terrific movie. I’m just very proud of Hugh and the way that he handled himself with that franchise and that character. It was a great experience to be involved with one of them and to get to work with them. I had mixed emotions when I heard that he was going to retire.”
It’s a shame because now that Logan has been made the conclusion to Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine character, we’re likely never going to see Schreiber return as Sabretooth. But then again, who knows? Stranger things have happened in the comic book genre.
Meanwhile, Logan will be returning to theaters on May 16 for a one-night special edition black-and-white showing.
