For years, fans of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy have been chomping at the bit to see Adam Warlock grace the big screen. After an Easter egg in the first film showing what is believed to be Adam’s famous cocoon, fans speculated his inclusion in future Guardians films. It’s finally been revealed that Warlock was closer than they thought and they shouldn’t rule out seeing him one day in the future.
In a recent interview with Slash Film, James Gunn, director of Guardians and it’s sequel Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, had this to say about the famous Marvel character:
“I love Adam Warlock. He’s one of my favorite characters. In all truth, I wrote an early treatment where I had Adam Warlock as a part…this is your big scoop, because I don’t think I’ve told anybody this… It was Adam Warlock. He was a big part of the screenplay and I realized it was one character too many. And I adored the character. I adored what we had done with him. I think we did something really creative and unique with Adam Warlock. But it was one character too many and I didn’t want to lose Mantis and Mantis was more organically part of the movie anyway. So I decided to save him for later.”
This clears up the mystery behind the then unnamed character Gunn mentioned was removed in an interview during the filming of Vol. 2.
“I’ll say one major thing that happened during the treatment phase, not even during the script phase, during the treatment phase, there was another character that was a major character. That was a part of the treatment,” Gunn explained. “But the eventual 70 page treatment, which is what it was, is what this movie is, and it has changed very, very little.”
Due to the recent announcements Gunn would direct the third movie in the Guardians series and that he would help Marvel guide their plans for the MCU post-Infinity War, it’s safe to assume that we will see Adam Warlock in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 or at the very least in another Phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 is one of the most hotly anticipated films of the summer. It’s opening weekend projections are already in at $150 million domestic, rivaling the box office of Captain America: Civil War at $179 million. Guardians Vol. 2 opens May 5th.
