Director Marc Webb has opened up with his feelings, looking back on his Spider-Man films. Even though fan reaction to “The Amazing Spider-Man” and its sequel has been mixed at best and poor at worst, Webb stands by his take on the Wall-Crawler.
“It’s hard for me to think about it, in terms of regrets. There are so many things that I’m proud of. There was an ambition with the second movie, in particular. The idea that it’s a superhero that can’t save everybody is something that I’m really proud of. I’m really proud of the ambition of that because it’s an important message, and I believe in that. I believe in what we were after. They’re really, really difficult movies to make. They’re complex in ways that people don’t fully understand. They weren’t disasters. But in terms of regrets, I don’t think of it in those terms. I felt really, really fortunate to have that opportunity.”
Webb also clarified he has no bad blood towards the films studio, Sony or its producers.
“I didn’t have an adversarial relationship with the studio, at all. There were a lot of very smart people. These are just incredibly complicated movies to make. I am proud of them, in many ways, and I stand by them. I’m certainly not a victim, in that situation.”
Spider-Fans (myself included) might be chomping at the bit to know what plans were in the works for the third film in the series before the deal with Marvel Studios was struck to bring Peter Parker to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When asked if any villains had been considered, Webb had this to say:
“Not really. We finished the second one and they were working on Sinister Six, so we all took a break. And then, the Sony hack happened and everything went away. But, that’s the way Hollywood works sometimes.”
Sony has not lost sight of their plans for an extended universe for Spider-Man and his rogues gallery.
Recently they released the proposed date October 5, 2018 for their “Venom” spin off. Rumors have been swirling for a “Silver Sable/Black Cat” movie as well. As long as the Aunt May movie never sees the light of day, we should thank our lucky stars.
“Spider-Man: Homecoming” stars Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Marisa Tomei and Robert Downey Jr. The film swings into theaters this summer on July 7.
